ALERT: West Hollywood Animal Sales Ban

Jun 14, 2024 | Uncategorized

UPDATE 9/15/25: The retail sales ban passed on final vote. It is set to become effective on May 1, 2026.

UPDATE 8/18/25: The Council voted to ban the “display, sell, deliver, offer for sale, barter, auction, give away or otherwise transfer or dispose” of any pet animals (applies to “any amphibian, arachnid, bird, fish, hermit crab, mammal (including any cat, dog, or rabbit), or reptile”) in pet stores. It should have a final passage in September. It is set to become effective on May 1, 2026. There are some exceptions, such as shelters/rescues and pet stores, which may have animals from shelters. This affects one pet shop in the city that sells some animals. The ordinance can be read at https://usark.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/25-west-hollywood-ban.pdf.

June 14, 2024: In 2010, West Hollywood banned the sale of dogs and cats in pet shops. The City is now looking to expand that to include other animals. This could mean that fish, birds, reptiles, small mammals, amphibians, and terrestrial/aquatic invertebrates will be banned from retail sales.

Note that the City report even boasts about West Hollywood supporting “animal rights.” If unaware, animal rights means a ban on all pets, all farm animals, all zoos, all animal breeding for conservation, and more. Animal rights means a vegan society with no eggs from chickens or honey from bees.

“This proposed expansion of the ban on the retail sales of animals is in line with the City’s longstanding support of animal rights and continues the City’s efforts to serve as a model for other jurisdictions in addressing animal cruelty and welfare.”

Understanding that Animal Welfare is not the same as Animal Rights is crucial. The two concepts are distinct, and advocating for animal rights entails endorsing an extreme and radical ideology. Today, it is a ban on animal sales in pet shops. Tomorrow, it is a ban on all animal sales. Then, there will be a ban on all pets. For anyone paying attention, it is clear what is happening and what the agenda is. Some legislators support this radical ideology, and some do not understand animal rights.

Below is a City report that heavily cites animal rights groups (groups working to remove all pets and animals from our lives). There is no formal proposal yet.
