Subject: NO on AB 246

Committee on Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining Member,

Please vote NO on Assembly Bill 246 as written. I certainly agree that animal welfare is a major concern and anyone breaking animal cruelty laws should be punished. However, as written, this bill would make it illegal to sell reptiles and amphibians at organized reptile shows. The reptile segment of the pet industry generates over $12 million in annual revenue for Nevada and this bill would remove a significant portion of that revenue. Over 40,000 households in Nevada own reptiles and would be affected by this bill.

As written, AB 246 defines "flea market" as: a flea market, open-air market or other organized event at which two or more persons offer merchandise for sale or exchange. This bill would force reputable reptile shows to cease operations. This will eliminate revenue to responsible reptile breeders, show promoters and businesses selling ancillary products. All which equates to less taxes for Nevada. Reptile shows may attract thousands of attendees in one weekend and allow targeted selling opportunities for hundreds of vendors.

I ask you to vote NO on AB 246 as written and to alter the bill to exclude reptile and animal-specific trade shows and conventions. The current terminology could negatively affect responsible business owners and pet owners.
